When Joe Feo started out as an importer, he faced a problem that every small and mid-size importer knows well: your customers expect dock-height doors, a forklift on site, and someone actually there to arrange pickups and deliveries. That's not a wish list — it's a minimum requirement to do business.
But signing a full warehouse lease? That meant paying for 10,000 square feet when you needed 500. It meant managing a facility when you should be out selling. It meant committing to a multi-year contract before you knew if the business would survive its first year.
So Joe did what most early-stage importers do — he outsourced. He patched together relationships with 3PLs and warehouses, negotiated rates one by one, chased invoices, and hoped the space would still be available next month. It worked, but barely, and it never felt like a real solution.
